A Switch/Disconnect Terminal Block is a crucial component designed to safely make, break, and isolate electrical circuits. Its operational limits are defined by two primary ratings:

1. Rated Voltage:

  • Definition: The system voltage (AC or DC) at which the terminal block is designed to operate continuously without risk of insulation breakdown or dangerous electrical arcing.
  • Purpose: To prevent dielectric failure, which could short circuits, equipment damage, or electric shock hazards.
  • Determining Factors:
  • Creepage and Clearance: The physical distance between conductive parts through air (clearance) and along the surface of the insulation (creepage). Higher voltages require greater distances.
  • Insulation Material: The quality and dielectric strength of the polymer used for the housing and barriers.
  • Application Note: The rated voltage (e.g., 600V AC) must always be higher than the voltage present in the actual circuit.
